Most impactful book I read this year:

The inner seven chapters each explore a separate literary technique used in the narrative sections of Hebrew scripture. For example, chapter 5 The Techniques of Repetition, discusses several examples of speeches or dialogue being repeated by characters and explains some of the artistic choices and effects that the way words are repeated has on the story.
No experience of literary theory or Biblical scholarship is necessary. However, this book may very weill get you started on both.

Very Liberal and Nearly Useless:

This book has only one redeeming quality. The author helps you see the artistic, literary aspect of the Bible. He is a typical academic type who believes that the people and places in scripture are all fiction made up to teach about God.
It is not at all recommended and I would throw it away now but it is required reading for a course.

A Must Read for Educated Christianity and Interested Parties:

As a Master of Theological Studies student, this book is a wonderful supplement to a class I am taking. It is wonderful as it fleshes out the narrative study of the biblical texts that is often glossed over in "technical" biblical study classes. The emphases on source and textual criticisms often remove the beauty of the biblical stories. Alter approaches the text from an academic view, but recaptures the beauty of the Hebrew Bible.

Simply the best reading I have done in months. The first chapter is worth paying for the entire book. Robert Alter just did it again.
